Grace Powell Hilliard

1916-2009

Hilliard joined the AAN in 1951.

Grace Powell “Billy” Hilliard, 93, was a lifelong resident of Annapolis.

She was born August 3, 1916, in San Francisco, to the late Commander & Mrs. Robert Bell Hilliard. She graduated from Annapolis High School and the Maryland Institute of Art. During
World War II, Billy was a Celestial Navigation Instructor for the Women Air Force Service Pilots (WASP) in Texas from its beginning through December 1943. Billy was a long time volunteer for The Clothes Box operated by the Auxiliary of Anne Arundel Medical Center, honored for volunteering over 11,000 hours.

She was extremely creative having painted, writing short stories and poetry, and enjoyed needlepoint, gardening, crossword puzzles along with being part of the Annapolis Chorale. Billy spent summers at her home in Nantucket Massachusetts where she sang in the St. Paul’s Church Choir and was an active member of the Artists Association and Nantucket Conservation Foundation.
