Peter Kerr came to Nantucket every summer for many years before he eventually founded “Kerr’s School of Art” on Washington Street. The school included many separate studios for painting and sculpture, and contained a small art supply store. He did much of the teaching with his wife, Gerta Kerr. Peter taught art at Cranbrook during the winter months. Besides teaching, Peter was a respected sculptor who liked to experiment with a variety of subject matter and mediums, particularly small sculpture. His work was influenced by other cultures, especiallly Native Americans.
