I grew up in Wellesley Mass., the oldest of six. Track, x-country, lifeguarding and all sorts of jobs filled my teens. WHS ‘68, Holy Cross ‘72, Loyola Med. ‘75, residencies in Surgery and Plastic/microsurgery rolled past. Through all these stops, I’ve painted; my happy place. My art went to family, friends, students, and colleagues. A special wife, two wonderful kids, and a practice in Albany NY. Linda and I ran a reconstructive mission to the Dominican Republic; treating children with trauma and deformities for 20 years. This was beyond rewarding. Painting has continued through it all. A fair number of papers written, many patients helped. Professor of Surgery and Plastics Program Director were among bases touched. I’m retired now; which gives me more time to paint, play golf, offer unwanted advice; and root for my grand boys.
I’ve been painting and drawing since I was very small. Perhaps this has cleared me a quiet place in my 50 years as a Reconstructive Plastic Surgeon. Life, limb, and livelihood are not (for once) at stake? The planning and surprises embedded in watercolor painting have me hooked. Sky and its’ changes can be captured, a persons’ essence glimpsed. I look to align intent with execution; and remain fascinated with the painting process and the juncture between real and abstract.
