Joe McCormick

My mother was an Art major in college, who dragged me to museums and galleries, and I hated every minute. When I was a teenager, my aunt bought me a watercolor painting set for Christmas, soon thereafter I started to dabble in painting.
My style came about as an accident. I was working on a watercolor painting that was coming along quite well, except for one small spot where I had made a mistake.
I tried to ‘fix’ that spot with diluted bleach and it completely ruined the painting, but the ‘mottled’ effect that came out was very intriguing, so I decided to follow that path.
Eventually, after much experimentation, I stopped using watercolors and started using food coloring, because the colors were much more vibrant, and they reacted better with the bleach than the watercolors.
I call my style ‘Emotional Abstraction’. I start off with a concrete image in mind and then try to make it as abstract as possible, without totally losing the basic concept.
I think of it as the point where Impressionism meets Abstract Expressionism.
In terms of influences, I would say that Sam Francis, Ed Moses, Mark Rothko and Wassily Kandinsky are at the top of the list.
I have had three solo shows of my work and been featured in Gallery Guide New York.

Artist Statement

I strive to have my artwork straddle the line between Impressionism and Abstract Expressionism.

Because of the materials (food coloring and bleach) that I use, my paintings tend to look unlike other artist’s work. That is not to say better - only different.

I have published a complete catalog of my artwork - “Catalogue Raisonne - Paintings 1974-2024’, which is available on Amazon.
