Boston native Kelly Broderick is an abstract artist and designer. She currently lives in coastal Massachusetts with her husband and two children. She holds a BFA in design from Syracuse University.
Kelly is passionate about color— it’s been a lifetime love affair.
As a teen and young adult Kelly studied at both MASSART and Boston’s Museum School. Painting and studying art in the city was a way for her to escape a difficult childhood and process coming into her own. Kelly stepped away from painting for nearly two decades while her design career took priority. Kelly worked as a footwear designer for several global athletic and fashion brands.
Beginning in 2017, Kelly faced hardship while caring for both her young children and dying parents. Her perspective as an artist came into focus through these challenging few years. Kelly once again sought refuge and self-expression in painting. Since early 2020 abstract painting has been the primary focus of her work.
Abstract Art has always taken my breath away.
I paint intuitively, using acrylic paint and a variety of
mark making tools, driven by color, marking a moment in time. It’s the happy accidents that thrill me.
The unexpected beauty of painting in the present— in the flow.
Taking in the beauty and chaos of the world and trusting
as my paintings emerge- with playfulness, joy and uncertainty.
My art is about joy and grief.
It’s finding and expressing calm in the midst of chaos, and continuing always to explore how life can be at once tragic and wonderous.
