When I first came to Nantucket from New York City forty years ago, I was struck by the light. The light was fantastic, the colors were clear and bright ! The sky, the ocean, the shadows on buildings, and even the fog conveyed to me a unique and magnificent place where I wanted to live. This unique landscape, in all its natural beauty, even on desperately gray dreary days has inspired my art. Now I travel often and my trips give me abundant snapshot-like moments to paint. The images are transient and so I try to capture the instant for my viewers to pause, and appreciate the temporary yet beautiful scene.
In terms of style, I consider my artwork to be a form of impressionism. I love the traditional impressionism of the early 20th century with its dappled light , quick brushstrokes, and an unfinished look. I incorporate some of this style in my paintings, but I often will use my oil paints in a more fluid fashion. I hope my work will provide a soothing feeling for reflection and appreciation of nature.
